Release Dates: First applications open November for following April/May
- 60% of permits released 24wks before hiking date
- Once gone will display as NR (not released)
- 40% of permits released 1week before hiking date.
- Once gone will display as 0
- Wilderness permit season is late April until October
Application Timeframe
- Applications open 24wks & 1wk before desired date
- Opens Sunday 1201am & closes 6 days later Saturday
- Results emailed Monday
- If you’re awarded reservation- you must claim by Thursday or you’ll lose it
- Then you will pick up reservation IN PERSON day before/day of in the park
Applying
- Pick up to 8 itineraries (locations and/or dates)
- Rank from most to least preferred
- Select group size and entry dates: either specific date or date range
- Date range is any day within a one-week time frame (highly rec this option)
Picking Up Permit
- Wilderness Center in the valley stations & info
- Pick up day before, or day of by 11am or permit cancelled
- Ask where you are permitted to leave your car- depends on permit
- Late pickup: Open reservation on your recreation.gov account
- Modify reservation and select “Yes” for late arrival
- This option will not be available until 1 week before start date
- Pickup during open hours of any permit station
Alternate leaders on Application:
- Up to 3 alternate per app who are eligible to pick up permit in person
- Main applicant/alternate must pick up permit for rest of group to enter
- Designed for situation if main applicant suddenly can’t make trip
- Can not add later- have to add during initial application
DO NOT RECOMMEND- decreases your odds of obtaining a permit
- If primary or alternate person appear on another application for same time= all disqualified
- Example: you & friend each apply for 2st week of June, both list each other as alternated= all disqualified
- Have your group all apply individually to increase your odds!
