Getting around in ICELAND

FILLING UP GAS

  • Notoriously difficult
  • Have to use DEBT card… NOT credit card as it will ask for a pin
  • NEVER hit “fill up” option (if it pops up)
    • Some places won’t give option- so just fill as usual
    • If you hit fill up- Your bank will lock your card
  • Usually will let you select a pre set amount in Krona
    • Guessing and checking your cars fill up $$

Driving

  • Drive on RIGHT side of road
  • Long stretches without gas stations- fill up anytime you can
  • Car rental recommend SUV/Larger car- lot of gravel roads
    • Get sand/ash & gravel insurance through rental!
  • Gravel Roads
    • All over Iceland, sometimes randomly on main highway
    • Almost all the turn offs to get to main attractions are gravel

RING ROAD= RT 1

  • Main motor way around Iceland
  • Single lane highway, tons of single car bridges
  • Northern half (less popular) basically off-roading

Parking at Attractions

  • Have to pay for 24hr parking no hourly option available (huge rip off)
  • Learned the hard way no matter how remote, they use cameras to scan plate
    • send ticket to rental company

Keflavík International Airport

  • Well labeled directions to rental car shuttle immediately after exiting outside
  • If not doing rental car: Flybus transfer to Reykjavík
  • 45min drive from Reykjavík
