Fimmvörðuháls Pass

FYI

  • Hard, 25 km/15.5 mi ONE WAY
  • 8 to 10 hours
  • Starts at the top of Skogafoss– No permit needed
  • High elevation- cold and chance of snow — CLOSED WINTER
  • Point to Point – Have to take bus the way back- summer only

THE HIKE

  1. Start early= Skogafoss all to yourself then climb the stairs to the right
  2. Easy path along Skógá River, past 25+ waterfalls called “Waterfall Way”
  3. Leads to foot bridge to cross over river
  4. 5km through gravel/rocky landscape- pretty boring
  5. Baldvinsskali hut
    • Has bathrooms but no running water
    • Can stay overnight here (only fits 20 people) Info here 
  6. Hike across snow fields- slippery and icy through Volcanic ash fields
  7. Hard part- strenuous uphill through volcanic soil
  8. Fimmvörðuháls Pass: the highest point of trail- mostly downhill from here
    • Optional Modi Crater: left towards red peak- 10min to top for scenic views
    • Detour west to Fimmvörðuháls Hut for accommodation if doing 2 day hike
  9. Hike down old lava field between 2 Glaciers
  10. Thorsmork Valley- great views as your decend- follow the chains!
    • There’s one part that’s hard/sketchy, real step & need chains
  11. FINISH at Básar in Thórsmörk.

TRANSPORT

  • Way THERE: Hvolsvöllur–> Skogafoss –Book bus to Skogafoss hereGmaps
    • Park car at Hvolsvöllur N1 gas station and take bus to Skogar/Skogafoss
  • Way BACK: Thórsmörk –> Hvolsvöllur N1 Book bus back here
    • Thórsmörk aka Þórsmörk
    • Last bus at 8pm- theres three different stops in Thórsmörk so double check
